Glen House

It is nice to arrange a getaway in February when the Scottish Borders are at their most serene. Snow falls through January and February are common, but don’t let that put you off. In light snow, hiking the hills is wonderful. If it gets heavier, then consider investing in snowshoes to get another aspect on the landscape.

Peebles can be stunning in January. Cold winters day are perfect for hikes down the river or in the hills. Afterwards cosy up at the Lodge on the Tweed, then maybe a visit to a Peebles pub for a nightcap.

Castles of the Scottish Borders

Visit the Lodge on the Tweed in November to experience the beautiful autumnal colours. Perfect for exploring the valley and the many castles and country homes dotted along the River Tweed. Neidpath Castle is short walk up the river. Other places to visit include Abbotsford – home of Sir Walter Scott – and Traquair House – the oldest inhabited house is Scotland.

Cycling Scottish Borders

Get your bike out to explore the quiet road and lanes of the Tweed valley. Peebles is the ideal base for your cycling holiday in the Scottish Borders. Test yourself on some of the famous climbs like “Paddy Slacks” over to St. Mary’s Lock, or cruise down the valley towards Kelso.

Tweed valley near Peebles

Lodge on the Tweed is an ideal hikers cottage, close to Peebles centre and with access to the surrounding hills and the River Tweed, straight from the door. Hike the John Buchan Way, which starts in the town, just on the south bank of the River Tweed. This is a beautiful 22km hike to Broughton passing over Cademuir hill then through the Manor valley to Stobo and on to Broughton. There is a bus service between Broughton and Peebles. Golf in Peebles

How about a golf trip in May? The Scottish Borders is largely undiscovered by golfers. Locally, there are 18-hole courses on the hillside at Peebles and by the River Tweed at Cardrona, there is also a gem of a 9-hole course at Innerleithen. The Freedom of the Fairways golf pass is Scotland’s best seller. It costs just £105 and allows up to six rounds of golf on consecutive days or four rounds if your play includes weekends. The five day pass is priced at £145 and permits up to 10 rounds of golf on five consecutive weekdays or eight rounds if your play includes a round at a weekend.
